Every day, Quill drove the sample rover in careful loops around Moonpan Valley, counting rocks with a click-click counter and promising Mission Control, “No silliness before supper.” The tires crunched over silver dust, and Earth hung above the hills like a blue marble someone forgot to put away. Quill wanted one thing: to make the lonely practice drive feel like a party.
Then he invented Moon Pebble Polo. He nudged one pebble with the rover’s bumper—plink!—toward a crater goal. Because of that, the pebble bounced into a line of other pebbles, and they skittered after him like popcorn in a pan. Because of THAT, the rover’s antenna tapped a sample flag, which wobbled, flashed, and sent Mission Control the message: PEPPERS DANCING NICELY.
A snort crackled through the radio. “Quill, are the peppers winning?” Finally, Quill swung the rover in a grand loop and made three neat crater goals for everyone watching back home. His laugh fogged the visor, big and bright and impossible to keep inside. Next time Earth looks like a blue marble, see if you can spot the first pebble of Moon Pebble Polo.
