Every afternoon, Quinn lined up two hay bales by the barn path and played a new game called Waiting-Roll Race. The rules were simple: tap the fence post, listen for the silo ladder to clink in the wind, then roll only when a cloud covered the barn roof. “Not yet,” Quinn whispered, smelling sweet hay and dusty grass.
Until one day, the front gate stuck half-open with a wooden squeak. Because of that, the first bale bumped the fence and stopped. Because of THAT, the second bale had to wait, wait, wait while chickens fussed behind the barn and the sun warmed Quinn’s neck. Finally, Quinn used the slow bale as a step, lifted the gate latch, and shouted, “Go!” Both bales rolled neatly to the barn doors. If you spot those round swirls, you’ll know which bale waited longest before the race began.
