🎨 How to color it

Color the flag’s stripes bright red and clean white, the star field deep blue, the pole silver gray, and the little hill trees leafy green. Use chunky crayons for the wide stripes and hills, and don’t worry if the tiny stars get a bit of happy color outside the lines. For a July surprise, make the clouds pale pink and peach like sunset behind the waving flag.

On a warm July hill, Pip sat by the tall pole and watched the flag hang still. The grass tickled, tickle-tickle, under Pip’s knees.

A little wind came late. Whoosh, soft whoosh. It smelled like clover and warm dust. “Hello,” Pip whispered.

Then the flag lifted big and slow, and the clouds seemed to sail with it. Pip waited, and the hill answered. Next time you see those wavy stripes, can you find the quiet whoosh Pip heard?
