Before the storm drumroll reached the grass, Pippa pressed two scraps of rubbery petal around her feet. She wanted boots sturdy enough to tap across the high flower stems and collect one silver rain bead for her weather shelf. The air smelled like wet dirt and snapped leaves, and every gust tried to peel her handmade boots right off.
At the tallest bellflower, a hollow knock answered her step: tok-tok, tok-tok. Pippa crouched and felt along the stem until her toe found a soft bump hidden under the green skin. “Nobody checks the floor of a flower,” she whispered. She tugged with a thorn hook, and out slid a tiny round button, speckled like a ladybug’s back.
When she stitched the button onto one boot, the boot tapped by itself—tok!—and the wind curled politely around her instead of shoving. Pippa made a button for the other boot, then dotted both with paint so she would remember where the secret had begun. Ever since, storm-garden butterflies wear spotted boots, and if you trace the windy swirls, you may hear Pippa’s tok-tok before the storm drumroll reaches the grass.
