🎨 How to color it

Color the smiling tent sunflower yellow, the backpack teal, the lantern cherry red, and the two owls soft chestnut brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny stars, compass letters, boot laces, and pinecone scales, saving broader marker fills for the tent panels and sleeping bag. Try a twilight twist by making the moon pale lavender and adding alternating golden and orange bands to the marshmallows as if they just came from the fire.

Every evening at Pinehook Outpost, Kira lined up the trail gear before the night hike: lantern by the tent, mugs by the log, boot beside the pack, pinecones in a neat pair. Last came the old compass. She set it flat, held her breath, and waited for the needle to stop its soft tick-tick. North never settled. It wobbled toward the camp sign as if listening to something buried in the wood.

One windy dusk, the fire snapped and the marshmallows hissed sugar into the smoke. Because the compass would not behave, Kira carried it past the owl posts and the fish pond, slow enough for the needle to choose. Because of that slow walk, she heard a tiny rattle inside the arrow-shaped sign: not a bug, not a pebble, but a hollow clink.

“Wait,” Kira whispered. She lifted the sign from its peg and found a tin star tucked in the back, bright as moonlit milk. When she placed it on the stump, the compass finally pointed true, steady and quiet. Next time you spot the camp arrow among the gear, imagine what else might be waiting inside wood that has been patient all day.
