🎨 How to color it

Color the cat vendor sandy orange, the bear honey brown, the bunny soft gray, then make the apples ruby red, the carrots bright orange, and the striped awning butter yellow and cream. Use sharp colored pencils for the small leaves, crate slats, scarf ends, and basket grids, saving broader marker fills for the sky, barn, and animal faces. Try giving the scattered autumn leaves three different shades—gold, rust, and olive—so the market path feels like it has been slowly gathering the season.

Every afternoon, Juniper set one apple at the very front of her stand and played a game she had invented: no selling it until someone asked why it was waiting. The apple shone beside pumpkins, corn, and wooden crates smelling of carrot tops and onion skins. Market bells clinked, leaves scratched along the path, and everyone picked quickly—except the front apple.

Until one day, a bear in a wool scarf stopped chewing his mitten and asked, “What is that apple listening for?” Because of that, Juniper held it up instead of weighing it. Because of THAT, a tiny brown leaf spun around the apple’s stem, then another, then three more, all circling the same way like silent dancers. The bunny with the basket leaned close. The bear forgot his shopping list.

At last, Juniper placed apples around the stand wherever the leaves pointed, making a slow red trail to the driest corner by the carrot crate. Under the boards, the market’s missing wind chime gave one sleepy silver ting. Next time you spot the apple in Juniper’s paw, see if it still looks as if it is listening.
