Every afternoon, Zadie bought one small apple at the corner grocery and saved the brown bag, smoothing each crease under her paws. She was building a parade pouch with her own folded corners, secret knots, and a handle braided from twine, but the slippery paper kept popping open with a pap-pap-pap.
One windy afternoon, the grocer’s ribbon spool leaped from the counter, bounced past the potatoes, and skittered toward the open door. Because of that, the bell ribbon for the lantern parade unrolled in a shining red stream. Because of that, jars rattled, baskets rocked, and Zadie had to race after it, pressing her unfinished pouch against her chest.
“Hold still, you runaway ribbon!” she cried. At last, Zadie tucked the spool into her handmade pouch, pinched the folds tight, and tied the twine handle with a proud tug. The bag held. Next time you spot that plain paper bag on the counter, can you imagine the pap-pap-pap that started it all?
