Behind the ribbon coral, where the sand smelled like salt and old pennies, Kiko kept one empty notch on his den wall. He wanted a blue bead to fit it, just one, so his room would stop feeling unfinished. “Back before the wrasse count ten,” he whispered, and slipped out past clicking crabs and tickly grass.

The reef market had shells, buttons, and pearls, but every blue bead was gone. Kiko searched under scallops, behind sponge chimneys, even beside a sleepy eel’s tail and lost two shiny snack clams to the current. Then a small clink came from the place nobody checked: the cracked cup of a toy ship half-buried in sand. Inside lay not one blue bead, but seven, along with a note scratched on driftwood: FOR WHOEVER NEEDS A LITTLE OCEAN.

Kiko could have filled his wall. Instead, he tucked six beads into neighbors’ empty spots—the hermit crab’s doorway, the baby ray’s sand circle, the anemone’s pebble ring—where nobody saw him. He kept the smallest bead for home, and if you ever spot his curling arms among the shells, ask yourself which treasures he already gave away before the wrasse counted ten.
