Under the prism tidefield, Quill tapped eight arms on the sand: tick, tack, tickety-tack. He had just invented Bubble Tag with Impossible Rules. Round bubbles were safe, tiny bubbles meant a spin, and any bubble that touched a curl made everyone say, “Blorp!” The water smelled salty and bright, and his arms looped so fast that even the little fish zigzagged in dizzy question marks.
The game grew wilder. Quill added triangle turns for coral branches, moon-swish moves for the waves above, and a secret rule for the fish shape tucked between his arms. Each new rule made him wonder what rule should come next. Then the bubbles began answering before he named them: big ones floated left, little ones hopped right, and the coral shadows pointed like arrows.
Quill went still, which was very hard for Quill. The tidefield had been playing a game of its own all along, using bubbles, waves, fish, and coral signs. “You sneaky sea,” he whispered, grinning. He changed the final rule: whoever noticed the ocean’s rule got to invent the next blorp. Next time you spot the tiny fish among his curling arms, dare it to tell you whether it is safe, spin, or blorp.
