Under the scoreboard, Gigi pressed the graduate cap to her chest and counted the white yard lines with her toe. The pep band’s drums went bum-bum-biddle, and the grass smelled sharp and sunny. She wanted to make the first toss for the seniors without doing her nervous squeak, the tiny “eep” that always escaped before big moves.
Her team chanted softly while she lifted one pom-pom high. Gigi bent her knee, grinned at the bright bleachers, and let the cap fly. It spun over her fingers, tassel flicking like a squirrel tail. From inside the cap came a ridiculous sound: pfffft-POP! A folded paper frog sprang out and sailed beside it.
For one blink, nobody cheered. Then the seniors howled with laughter, and Gigi laughed hardest, because her “eep” had been beaten by a frog. The note on its belly said, “First tosses deserve backup.” She caught the cap, bowed to the frog, and tried again, brave enough to squeak if she had to. Next time you see that cap in the air, can you spot the place where a paper frog might have been hiding under the scoreboard?
