🎨 How to color it

Color the whole orange a bright tangerine, the three citrus slices golden yellow with pale cream centers, and the veined leaves a fresh leaf green. Use a sharp colored pencil for the thin seed shapes and radiating lines inside each slice, then switch to broader strokes for the big round peel. Try making the largest front slice glow from lemon yellow in the middle to deeper orange along its thick rind.

Under the warm lamp of the fruit sketching table, Cato rolled in a careful loop around a saucer. His little challenge was secret: before the peel-clock clicked, he would stamp one perfect circle in orange dust. Scratch, turn, press. But every time, his stem bumped the paper and his leafy sprig made a wobbly tail.

A whisper came from the paper fibers. “Try the inside.” Cato held still. The table smelled like sharp juice and pencil shavings as he split one round drop of himself into neat, bright rooms. Each room pointed to the same tiny center, as if the sun had folded itself small enough to live there.

Cato grinned, feeling snug as a seed in its own place. Since then, every orange slice has kept those secret sunburst wedges, so the fruit remembers where it belongs. If you spot the circle with the busiest middle, you’ve found Cato’s first perfect try.
