🎨 How to color it

Try a chestnut brown for the mare, a golden tan for the foal, soft sage green for the hill lines, and pale blue for the three broad clouds. Use colored pencils for the horses’ flowing manes and tails so you can follow each long strand without covering the black outlines. Add a tiny secret touch by making one distant hill a misty lavender, as if something hidden waits beyond the fence.

Under the morning’s third cloud, Sable set himself a dare: count the clouds from the far rail without pressing his nose against his mother’s warm side. The pasture smelled of wet grass and old wood, and the fence looked farther away than it ever had at breakfast. He stepped out anyway. One cloud. Two. The wind pushed his forelock into his eyes, and a burr caught in his tail, prickly as a nettle. He did not run back.

At the rail, the third cloud slid over the hills like a white boat. Beneath it, Sable noticed three hoof-shaped scratches on the lowest board, half hidden by grass. “Mother,” he called, keeping his voice small but steady, “did you make these?”

She came beside him, her mane brushing his neck. “Your first walk to this rail,” she said. “I marked it before you could remember.” Sable touched the scratches with his nose. He had come for three clouds and found proof that he had been brave before. Next time you see the lowest fence board, check the grass for Sable’s secret under the morning’s third cloud.
