🎨 How to color it

Try a chestnut brown horse, a navy riding jacket, tan saddle leather, and red-and-white stripes on the jump rails. Use sharp colored pencils around the bridle straps, stirrups, and the horse’s tucked legs so the thin lines stay crisp. Add a soft golden glow behind cone 4 to make this midair moment feel like the best jump of the round.

The story behind this coloring page

The Fourth Jump’s Whisper — Under the pale morning rails, Selah counted breaths instead of seconds. Read the full story →

Under the pale morning rails, Selah counted breaths instead of seconds. She pressed two fingers to Comet’s warm neck, waiting for the small drum of his heartbeat to match hers before they entered the show ring. The sand smelled dry and sun-baked, and every hoofstep made a soft shuff, shuff, as if the arena were turning pages.

They moved from one jump to the next without hurry. A blue plank, a low oxer, a pair of white standards—each one arrived, lifted, and fell behind them. At jump four, Comet’s ears pricked toward the striped rail, and Selah felt the whole world go quiet in the space between ground and sky. “Now,” she whispered, though Comet already knew.

When they landed, a folded scrap fluttered from beneath the bottom rail, stirred loose by the air of their leap. Later, Selah opened it beside Comet’s stall. In careful pencil it said, The patient horse hears the hidden bell. No one knew who had tucked it there, not the judge, not the rail setter, not the sparrows in the rafters. But Comet lowered his nose to the note, and the paper trembled like a tiny bell. Next time you find cone 4, see if you can spot the place where the whisper was waiting under the pale morning rails.
