🎨 How to color it

Color the Explorer 1 rocket silver with red fins, give the flame bright orange and yellow, and shade the cratered planet in dusty lavender with blue-gray mountains. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny rivets, cockpit details, and crater rims, then switch to broader strokes for the smoke clouds and open sky. Try making the blast cloud fade from pale peach near the flame to soft purple at the edges, as if the planet dust is glowing.

The story behind this coloring page

Before the last launch bell, Orin slipped his glove around an empty sample pouch and hopped away from the rocket’s warm ladder. He only needed one blue moon-pebble for his school display, the kind that clicked like glass when you shook it. The crater plain smelled dusty and sharp, like cold pennies. Behind him, Explorer 1 hummed, tick-tick-tick, ready to leave.

Orin climbed into the nearest crater and paid for it with one boot full of gritty gray powder. Then the floor chuckled. Not cracked. Chuckled. A little round stone rolled out from under his toe and whispered, “Don’t take the quiet ones. They’re asleep.” Orin froze so hard his helmet squeaked. “Then who can come?” he asked. The crater puffed a ring of silver dust, and a speckled pebble bounced straight into his pouch, rattling with tiny happy clinks.

Back inside the rocket, Orin did not show just his class display. He shook the pouch once, and the whole cabin filled with crater giggles, so bright the pilot laughed too. Next time you spot Explorer 1 blasting over those round pits, keep the secret: one of them is still chuckling like cold pennies.
