At noon, the harbor smelled of salt, warm rope, and engine smoke as Quinn clipped a little silver bell to her jacket. She wanted every person on Pier 6 to hear the fireboat’s water salute, so she rang ding-ding for the sailboats, ding-ding for the crane crew, and ding-ding for the warehouse cats blinking in the sun. The big boat eased into the basin, its hoses resting like sleepy metal arms.

When the pumps began, the water rose in bright white sheets. It hissed and thundered, and Quinn felt the sound in her ribs. People stopped unloading crates. Dockhands shaded their eyes. Even the gulls circled quietly, as if the harbor had taken one giant breath.

Then the surprise appeared—not in the sky, not under the waves, but inside the old brass nozzles nobody ever noticed. Tiny glass prisms, tucked there years ago by a retired engineer, split the spray into ribbons of red, blue, green, and gold. “Everyone gets some!” Quinn shouted, laughing as colors trembled across boats, windows, and wet planks. The joy felt too wide for one pier, so she rang her bell until the whole waterfront turned to look; can you spot where the sleepy metal arms are sharing the harbor-sized rainbow?
