🎨 How to color it

Give the betta’s body a deep turquoise, its huge ruffled fins a blend of violet and coral, the tall water plants olive green, and the bubbles pale blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the many fin rays and tiny scales, pulling each stroke outward from the fish’s body to follow the lines. For a special twist, shade the tail from darker violet near the body to bright coral along the wavy edge.

Every evening, Soren traced the same quiet loop through the glass-garden reeds, counting the round bubbles that rose past his nose. The water smelled faintly of stone and cucumber peel, and the pump hummed one low note: mmmmmm. He wanted to know where that note came from. He checked the gravel caves, the fern roots, even the shadow under the feeding ring—until one dusk, the hum skipped like a plucked string.

Because of that, Soren followed the shiver instead of his route. Because of that, he brushed against the tallest leaf, and a stripe of silver light slid across his wide tail. Lines he had thought were only fin-rays suddenly met and curved into paths: a tiny map, hidden where nobody had thought to look. “It’s on me,” he whispered, and the words fizzed into bubbles.

At last he swam the glowing route through the plants to the back glass, where a pebble had wedged against the pump tube. He nudged it free. The old note returned, deeper and warmer, and the conservatory lights trembled like stars. Next time you see Soren’s spreading tail, try to find the secret roads that began with one low mmmmmm.
