Behind the tallest whisper tree, Yara stretched for the first sweet leaf of morning. The leaves smelled peppery and bright, but the tree kept lifting them just out of reach with a hush-hush-hush.
Now, don’t tell everyone this part: Yara did not stomp. She waited. A small gray rock near her hoof gave a tiny tick. Under it, where nobody ever looked, sat a beetle painting warm brown circles with muddy feet. “Hold still,” the beetle whispered.
Yara held still through the tickle, through the sun, through one more hush. Since that morning, giraffes have worn patient spots, and if you peek near the rocks, you may find where the first one began behind the tallest whisper tree.
