Every afternoon, after the pretzel cart bell went ding-ding on Maple Pier, Brynn rolled to the skatepark and tapped the scuffed comet sticker inside her pocket. She had promised herself it would not touch her helmet until she could drop into the tall ramp without making the “startled chicken” face. Every afternoon, she waited while bigger kids clattered down first, wheels buzzing like angry bees.
Until one day, the ramp answered with a tiny clunk. Brynn stopped at the lip. The twins behind her groaned, but she crouched and saw one board lifting like a loose tooth. Because of that, she made everyone wait while she fetched the caretaker’s wrench. Because of that, the twins discovered the rail was wobbly too and helped tighten it, grumbling only half the time. “Patience is louder than wheels,” Brynn said, which made no sense and made everyone laugh.
At last, the ramp sat solid and sun-warm under her sneakers. Brynn tucked the comet sticker onto her helmet, breathed in sawdust and river salt, and dropped in with a grin so wide it could have stolen the pretzel cart bell. If you peek at her pocket next time, you might hear that old ding-ding waiting there.
