🎨 How to color it

Color the gnomes’ pointed hats cherry red, violet, and sunny yellow, with warm brown wood on the round door, mossy green roof plants, and pink flowers in the window boxes. Use sharp colored pencils for the fern fronds, leaf veins, basket mushrooms, and tiny roof moss, then switch to smoother strokes on the broad cottage stones and path pebbles. Try making the oversized leaves at the top fade from deep emerald near the stems to pale spring green at the tips, as if they are keeping the cottage in secret shade.

The story behind this coloring page

Under the fern shadows, Pippa hooked both hands around her father’s lantern and tried to lift it without clanking. She wanted to carry the first evening light from the round door to the garden gate by herself, but the handle was cold, heavy, and much too sure of being dropped. Her mother’s mushroom basket smelled of damp earth beside her. “Just to the first stone,” Pippa whispered.

That was when the first stone whispered back. Not loudly—pebbles are careful—but with a dry tick-tick like seeds in a pod. “Not alone,” it said. Pippa nearly sat down on the path. The pebble asked to be moved closer to the door, where lantern glow could warm its speckled face. Pippa’s knees wobbled, yet she set the lantern down, nudged the pebble with her stick, and slid another beside it. Then another. The lantern gave one brave clink.

By supper, a little trail curved from the arched door through the garden, each stone catching a crumb of light. Ever since, gnome cottages keep pebble paths so shy stones can gather at dusk; if you spot the smallest one near Pippa’s feet, don’t tell everyone how it got there.
