Before travelers had a north to trust, Sela sat in a quiet celestial workshop, pressing warm gold leaf into narrow points with her thumb. She wanted one star sturdy enough to hold the sky’s attention, not the quick sparks that fell apart at dawn. The work smelled faintly of metal rain and candle smoke. Then a small moon-moth, blown in from nowhere, landed in the unfinished center and dusted it with silver from its wings.
Sela did not shoo it away. She carved room for the dust, then ringed it with hand-cut petals, curls, and little waiting moons. Each mark answered the last: point, curve, hollow, shine. When she lifted the star, it did not blaze; it steadied. The sky grew still around it, proud as a table after good work. Ever since, the northern star keeps a silver heart, because Sela made space for an unexpected visitor and finished it with her own hands.
