Under the windy oaks, a small bear hurried across the checkered blanket with his favorite skillet hugged tight. Hugo wanted to follow the tiny bumps inside it before the picnic song began. Tap-tap, sizzle-skip! The pan smelled like butter and warm corn. He tilted it left, and the soft mash made a hill. He tilted it right, and three little dots appeared like stepping-stones. “This way!” Hugo whispered, bouncing past acorns and leaves.
At the basket, the dots turned into a smile. At the thermos, the hill became a bear-ear curve. Then the twisty steam rose up, not like dinner at all, but like music notes. The grown-up bears began clapping spoons on cups—clink, clink, clink! Hugo had not carried a snack map. He had carried the first song for the forest feast. If you follow the leaves around his blanket, can you guess where the next sizzle-skip will lead?
