Every day, before the sun warmed the palm tops, Thren tapped a cracked shell against the river stones: click, step, splash, breathe. The shell was no bigger than his eyelid, but it had belonged to the scout who first showed him the safe ford. Thren wanted to reach the far bank alone and leave a fern ribbon there before the herd arrived.
Until one day, rain rolled down from the hills and shoved the river into new silver lanes. The usual stones vanished under brown water, and fish flickered where dry rock should have been. Because of that, Thren pressed the shell to his ear and heard not magic, but the tiny rattle of grit inside it. Because of THAT, he shook it over the water and watched the grains drift toward the slow places between rocks. “Not fast,” he whispered. “True.”
At last he stepped where the sand swirled lazily, stone by stone, while cold water slapped his ankles. On the far bank, his fern ribbon snapped green in the wind. Next time you see the little fish near his feet, can you spot the path Thren trusted: click, step, splash, breathe?
