🎨 How to color it

Use creamy white and soft charcoal for the panda’s face, jade green for the bamboo leaves and stalks, and coral pink with golden yellow centers for the cheek flowers. Because the ears, eye patches, nose, and forehead bloom are packed with tiny leaf veins and spirals, use sharp pencils and color one ring or patch at a time. Try making the central forehead mandala glow from yellow to orange while keeping the outer bamboo background in cooler greens.

Every evening, Veda padded through the glass-roofed conservatory and matched the bamboo shadows to the floor mosaics: left curl to right curl, leaf to leaf, hush to hush. Then she invented Crooked Twin, a game with one rule—change a single pattern so neatly that the room would not notice until it hiccuped. She nudged a pebble, tilted a blossom, and tucked one whisker of fern into the wrong spiral.

Because of that, the moonlit tiles seemed to wink; because of that, the keepers blamed the draft, the beetles began taking sides, and Veda had to keep improving the joke. Finally, she placed herself in the middle, black ears like parentheses around all the fussy curls, and the room settled with a soft leafy sigh. “There,” she murmured. “Exactly uneven.” The bamboo smelled green and wet, and every crooked twin pointed home.
