🎨 How to color it

Color the number 77 car cherry red, the checkered flag black and white, the finish banner bright yellow, and the cheering grandstand in cool blues. Use sharp colored pencils for the tire letters, racing stripes, and tiny crowd faces, then switch to markers for the broad car panels. Try a smoky gray fade behind the rear wheels so the “ZOOM!” and “VROOM!” words feel extra fast.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Finish Flags Wave — Before finish flags waved, the last lap ended with guessing. Read the full story →

Before finish flags waved, the last lap ended with guessing. Renn rolled to the work shed at dawn, tires crunching over grit, and stacked scraps of white cloth beside squares of black tar-paper. He wanted every racer to know exactly where the race ended. But his wooden sign kept tipping in the wind, and the painted letters blurred under the smell of hot rubber and dust.

On the quiet back curve, Renn met a cloud-weaver mending a torn breeze with silver thread. “Your sign is too stiff,” she said softly. She gave him a needle made from moonlight. Renn stitched the black and white squares into a wide cloth, tugging each seam smooth with his own bumper hooks. When the wind caught it, the cloth snapped—whip-whap!—and every engine heard the ending before they saw it.

Renn stood warm from headlight to hubcap as the racers thundered past his handmade flag. Ever since, finish flags wave because a little car built the finish line to move with the wind. If you listen to the big flag beside Renn, can you hear its soft whip-whap over the grit?
