Before the mist lifted, a small crack opened in the warm shell, and Ivo pushed one pebble-dusty claw toward the gold stripe of morning on the nest. The woven twigs smelled of rain and crushed leaves. Around him, fern tips trembled, and two round eggs rested close like quiet moons. Ivo wanted the light, but the world outside his shell was so wide that his toes curled back inside.
A low note rolled through the thicket—mmm-ooo, soft as wind in a hollow reed. A tall Parasaurolophus lowered her crest between the leaves, not near enough to bump the nest, only near enough to share the sound. Ivo blinked at her bright eye. The note came again, and this time he felt it tickle his chest more than his ears.
Then Ivo understood the sound was not from the sky or the stones. It was a hello shaped by a nose and a crest. He lifted his chin, tapped his tiny beak to hers, and made the smallest answer: “Mmm.” The fern tips held still, listening. Next time you see his little face raised from the cracked shell, can you hear that first hello in the morning light?
