At the potting table, with clay dust tickling his nose, Rafi pressed tiny balls between his fingers. Plip, pat, roll. He wanted the top of his succulent pot to look like a dry riverbed he had made all by himself. The tall green leaves stood up like quiet sails while he tucked each pebble around them. “This one goes here,” he whispered.
When the last pebble would not sit flat, Rafi lifted it. Underneath was a smooth blue bead, cool as rain and shaped like a drop. He had forgotten hiding it in the clay yesterday. Now it looked just right, not lost at all. Rafi pressed it onto the front leaf and sat back, proud and still. The pot seemed to hold a secret sip of sky among the pebbles. Next time you see the little drop, can you tell which pebble kept the surprise?
