🎨 How to color it

Color the puppy honey gold, the butterfly wings tangerine and violet, the daisies white with sunny yellow centers, and the rolling hills soft green. Use sharp colored pencils for the puppy’s little fur strokes and the butterfly’s dots, then switch to broader strokes for the hills and sky. Try making the grass in two greens so the puppy’s path looks like a secret trail through the meadow.

Under the warm tickle of tall grass, Fern invented Meadow-Whisper: if she could collect three tiny sounds before the sun touched the hilltop, she would win a secret only the meadow knew. She already had grass going shh-shh against her paws and a daisy stem creaking like a little door. For the third sound, a spotted butterfly dipped past her nose, silent as a wink. Fern stepped out of her flattened grass nest and followed.

Past the daisies, the wind smelled like clover and dust. Fern splashed through prickly seed heads, and one burr caught in her fluffy tail. “Wait, I’m still playing,” she whispered, though the burr tugged and the butterfly kept drifting. At the far rise, Fern stopped. The meadow had gone huge around her: trees below, hills beyond, sun bright as a coin. Then she heard it—her own small pant, the butterfly’s papery flutter, and the grass answering all around.

Fern carried the burr home like a tiny price paid for a giant secret. Back in her grass nest, she tucked her paws under her chin and listened. The third sound had been there because she belonged inside all the others. If you spot the butterfly hovering ahead, don’t tell everyone—it may still be guarding the meadow’s shh-shh secret.
