Under the dry rushes, where the mud smelled cool and green, Nella pressed one paw to the pond bank and whispered her challenge: “Three secret ripples before sundown.” Not frog splashes, not wind wrinkles, not the lazy rings around water bugs. Secret ones. She stepped out from her snug hollow into the cattail shade, where brown heads nodded high above her ears and the water made soft lap-lap sounds.
The first ripple came from a lily pad that shivered though no foot touched it. Nella leaned closer. A reed brushed her nose, tickle-tickle, and she almost sneezed her count away. The second ripple slid from the shadow of a silver fish, gone before her eye could catch it. For the third, the pond went still. Then a green frog blinked from the bank. “Pay one whisker-wiggle,” he croaked.
Nella wiggled both whiskers until they fizzed. The frog dipped his toe, not to splash, but to point. Beneath the water lily, a bubble rose—plip—and opened a perfect circle. Nella carried home something better than three ripples: the idea that quiet things sometimes answer if you stay curious long enough. Next time you see the flower on the pond, can you find where her third ripple began?
