Every evening, when mist smelled of wet leaves, Jun padded along the ridge trail and nudged fallen bamboo aside so smaller animals would not trip in the dark. He liked the soft thump of each cane rolling safely into the grass, though no one ever saw him do it.
Until one day, one stubborn stalk would not move. Jun dug around its roots, and cold water kissed his paw. Because of that, he pushed deeper and found a tiny spring tucked under the bamboo where nobody thought to look. Because of that, he scratched a shallow channel down the dusty path, and the water ran silver between stones.
By moonrise, thirsty beetles, finches, and a striped field mouse drank without knowing who had opened the way. “Enough for everyone,” Jun whispered. Then he walked on, nudging one more cane aside, while behind him the ridge trail hummed with wet leaves; if you follow the little path with your eyes, can you spot where his quiet gift might begin?
