Every morning, Quill climbed the tallest fence post and sent his crow across the ridge. He wanted it to reach the far pasture, where the lambs slept through breakfast and the milk cart wheels started late. But his voice always thinned in the wind, soft as straw dust, before it crossed the last hill.
One pale morning, the sun lifted like a coin behind the fields, and Quill tried again. “Just one farther,” he whispered. His crow cracked, bounced off the rails, and struck the old round bell bolted under his perch. Because of that, the bell gave a tiny answering hum. Because of that hum, Quill heard something inside it: tick-tick, rustle, chime.
He peered at the place nobody checked, behind the bell’s rim, and found a curled brass cricket, no bigger than a bean, hidden in the hollow. It rubbed its wings, and the bell shivered with silver sound. Quill crowed once more, not loudly, but true, while the cricket rang along. Across the far pasture, sleepy lambs lifted their heads. Next time you see the fence post, listen for the small tick-tick that helped Quill send his morning one farther.
