🎨 How to color it

Color the T. rex moss green with darker olive stripes, the volcano warm charcoal with glowing orange lava lines, and the palm fronds deep jungle green. Use sharp colored pencils for the dinosaur’s teeth, claws, stripes, and the many fern edges, then switch to broader strokes for the cliff and sky. Try a golden sun fading into pale peach clouds, so the smoky volcano feels extra dramatic behind the roar.

At the basalt rim, where the rocks smelled like hot pennies, Zed pressed one toe over a crack and whispered, “I’ll count ten smoke puffs.” He had made the challenge himself, which is the worst kind, because no one else can call it off for you. The volcano went huff… huff… huff, and each puff shook warm dust onto his nose.

By puff nine, Zed’s knees knocked like loose seedpods. He wanted to run under the fan palms, but a tiny hiss slipped from the mountain, thin as a secret escaping. Zed leaned closer. The hiss sounded lonely. So, on puff ten, he opened his jaws and answered—not his biggest roar, just the first brave one he could find.

The mountain swallowed the sound. Then it boomed it back, deeper, rounder, rolling through the ferns until every cliff learned the trick. Ever since, volcanoes rumble before they burst, warning the jungle in Zed’s borrowed voice; if you spot his open jaws by the smoky peak, keep the secret and count the puffs.
