The best patch on Tavi’s flag had popped loose during breakfast: a little ringed planet that made everyone on Station Pebble grin. Tavi tucked the plain flag under one arm and stepped out from the warm hatch to fetch a spare from Supply Crate Seven, where the moon dust squeaked like dry snow under each boot.
Halfway there, a whisper crackled in the helmet. “Psst. Flag carrier. Can you hear us?” Tavi froze beside a crater shining silver in Earthlight. The voice belonged to the tiny survey rover, Bix, stuck nose-first in powder. Pulling Bix free cost Tavi the last strip of patch glue, and the spare patch floated off, spinning away like a coin.
Then Bix opened a secret compartment. Inside was a stamp pad full of glow-ink. Tavi pressed one dusty glove to the flag: five bright fingers, waving for everyone back at Station Pebble. When Tavi planted it on the ridge, cheers burst through the radio so loud they bounced around the helmet. Next time you spot that flag, keep the secret: one missing patch made room for a whole moon of grins.
