Every evening, after the reef dimmed to blue velvet, Kira swept sand from the cave arch with her tail and counted the bubbles rising past the roof: one, two, three, hush. She wanted the old doorway to sound right before the moonfish passed, but a flat, hollow note kept tapping from nowhere.
One night, the note came back louder—tok, tok, tok—until Kira pressed her cheek against the rough stone. Because of that, a line of bubbles slipped behind a fan of coral instead of upward. Because of that, Kira followed them into a crack nobody had bothered to sniff, not even the nosy shrimp with glassy feet. Salt-cool water brushed her spots, and the crack opened into a small round room lit by pale shells.
In the center waited a ring of bubbles, holding still like pearls on a necklace. “You were under the doorway,” Kira whispered. The hidden room hummed the missing note, and the arch finally answered in a soft, home-deep chord. Next time you see Kira’s bubbles rising past the roof, can you guess which ones know the way in: one, two, three, hush?
