Before breakfast, under grass wet as cold string, Luca nudged his rubber tire and set his challenge: one full roll around the thicket path without dropping his bandana knot. The tire bumped, whuffed, and wobbled past the low bushes. Then it made a sound Luca had never heard from rubber—plink, plink—like a tiny spoon tapping glass. He could have carried it back to his sunny dirt patch, but he pushed on, nose prickling with the smell of rain and old leaves.
At the briar hollow, the tire stuck in mud with a squelch. Luca tugged until his paws turned brown and his bandana slipped crooked. Inside the tire’s rim, a beetle-sized wind chime hung from a thorn, ringing whenever the hollow breathed. “I found your secret,” Luca whispered. He nosed the chime free, tucked it in the bandana’s fold, and rolled home slower, listening to its brave little plink. If you spot his tire beside him now, imagine what it might whisper next under grass wet as cold string.
