Every afternoon, Orla dragged snacks to the pine clearing and sat on plain grass, then challenged herself to make a picnic mat sturdy enough for honey, berries, and one very wiggly bear bottom. She braided willow strips until her paws smelled green and woody, but the squares came out lopsided. “Perfectly wobbly,” she told a beetle, who did not argue.

Until one day, Orla set her honey pot on the new mat and the sticky dipper flopped over with a plip. Because of that, the ants marched in a glittering line. Because of that, Orla scooted the berry basket away, tipped three blueberries into the weave, and discovered they fit like buttons in the crooked gaps.
