🎨 How to color it

Color the kitten soft charcoal gray, the jack-o’-lantern bright pumpkin orange, the crescent moon buttery yellow, and the twisted tree smoky brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the pumpkin’s face, the tiny stars, the bats, and the bark curls so the small Halloween details stay crisp. Try a deep violet-to-navy sky behind the moon, leaving a pale glow around the kitten’s star-tipped tail.

Under the first cool stars, Miso padded in circles around the star orchard, tapping fallen acorns with one careful paw. He wanted a sound bright enough to call every sleepy friend outside for the Moon-Milk Festival, but each tap made only a dull tuk in the leaves. The old wind-tree creaked above him, and the air smelled of dry bark, pumpkin rind, and faraway rain.

Miso stepped past his warm moss nest and followed a silver flicker between the pumpkin rows. A bat squeaked overhead. A thorn scratched his tail, and he left one soft gray tuft behind, but the flicker kept blinking from the jack-o’-lantern nobody used because its grin was crooked. Inside, where everyone had only seen candle soot, a tiny bell hung from a curled pumpkin seed. Miso touched it. Ting! The note floated up like honeyed moonlight.

He carried the bell home on his tail ribbon and rang it once, twice, three times. Doors opened in the hedge. Fireflies lifted. Even the shy moon seemed to smile wider as neighbors came with cups, crumbs, and quiet cheers. Miso had wanted one clear chime; he got a circle of ears to hear it. Next time you spot the crooked pumpkin, listen for the bright little ting under the first cool stars.
