🎨 How to color it

Give the butterfly’s wings tangerine orange and sky blue sections, the flower crown pink and yellow petals, and the tall garden flowers leafy green stems. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the big wing panels, and let kids skip tiny dots if their hands get tired. Try making the two spiral antennae purple with a little yellow at the curled tips, like they caught sunshine.

Under a sleepy blue morning, Tessa patted her petal crown. She wanted to bring one warm gift to the shady side of the flower garden, where the small buds stayed closed and chilly. The air smelled like wet leaves, and her wings made a soft fuff-fuff over the stems.

She searched under daisies, behind poppies, and even inside a curled leaf. Nothing. Then a tiny tickle tapped her head. “What’s in my crown?” Tessa whispered. Hidden between two yellow petals was a crumb of sunshine, round and bright, humming like a happy bee.

Tessa laughed so hard the joy had to go somewhere. It ran up her antennae, curling both tips into golden spirals that sprinkled warmth over every closed bud. Ever since then, butterfly antennae curl at the ends to hold and share a little sun; next time you see Tessa’s spirals, can you tell where the joy went?
