🎨 How to color it

Color the elephant soft gray, his striped soccer jersey sky blue and white, the ball bright orange, and the goal net silver-gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the crisscross net and jersey stripes, then switch to broader marker strokes for the elephant’s ears and open patches of grass. Try a pale green field with darker green tufts so the orange ball looks like it is bouncing right out of the corner.

Under the first blue hour, Wimble rolled a striped moon-ball across the empty pitch and whispered the rules of his new game: kick, trumpet, listen. If the ball heard him, it had to come back. The grass smelled cold and peppery, and the corner flag made a small flap-flap like a secret being folded. But every time Wimble called, the ball thumped into the plain goal and slipped out the other side without a word.

Then the crickets began clicking in pairs. Wimble noticed their shadows crossing on the goal frame—one line, then another, then another—until the moonlight wove dark diamonds in the air. “Hold it there,” he breathed. He lifted his trunk, gave one soft toot, and nudged the ball into the shining pattern. This time it bounced back with a round, happy pom.

By morning, every goal in the little world wore diamond netting, because diamonds remember a ball’s way home. And if you trace the net behind Wimble, maybe you can find the very first moon-shadow that knew he belonged under the blue hour.
