At the meadow gate, Pip placed one paw, then the other, on the cool dirt. He wanted to sit where the old dogs sat, right between the tall posts, while the morning smelled like clover and warm fence wood. The gate made a soft creak-creak in the breeze. Pip’s red scarf tickled his chest, and he whispered, “I can stay.”
Sun slid over the rails. Bees hummed near the grass tufts, and clouds drifted like sheep with no legs. Then Pip’s ear twitched. From the little groove beside the latch came a tiny silver sound: ting! Hidden there was a round bell, no bigger than a berry, tied with blue thread. It rang only when a brave new sitter breathed slowly beside it. Pip smiled, the gate creaked, the bell answered, and next time you see his paws by the cool dirt, can you find where the tiny ting is hiding?
