🎨 How to color it

Give the girl's overalls a denim blue, her wide sunhat a straw yellow, the barn a cheerful red, and the carrots and tomatoes bright garden colors. Use sharp colored pencils for the basket weave, plaid shirt, roof shingles, and carrot lines, saving broader marker strokes for the hills and sky. Try making every vegetable in the basket a slightly different shade, as if she gathered a rainbow harvest before sharing it.

All morning, under the straw-sweet brim of her hat, Elowen searched the rows for one vegetable of every color. Red tomato, orange carrot, yellow squash, green pepper—the basket grew heavy against her arm, and the little trowel tapped her boot with a soft clink, clink. She saved one empty corner for blue, though the garden only smelled of warm leaves, damp earth, and sunlit vines.

At the hill fence, she stopped to rest. The barn roof shone red behind her, clouds drifted like puffs of flour, and the basket shadows fell across a pale turnip. In that cool patch, its white skin turned the gentlest blue. Elowen held her breath. “Oh,” she whispered, “you were hiding in the shade.”

She carried the basket to the picnic table where the farmhands were slicing bread, and tilted it so everyone could see the blue-shadow turnip among the bright harvest. Soon every plate had a tiny cool shadow beside its colors, and the joy in Elowen’s chest felt too big to keep. Can you spot the basket corner where the blue first waited under the straw-sweet brim?
