Under the prickly pines, Rune clicked twelve bulbs around his harness and whispered his challenge into the cold: “Thirteen before the moon clears the top star.” The bulbs gave off a warm glass smell, like dust waking on a windowsill. He needed one more, but the last socket dangled dark near his hoof, and all the spare bulbs were kept in the watch shed beyond the drift line.
He stepped out anyway. Snow squeaked under each hoof. A trail of tiny blue sparks blinked ahead, too quick to be ordinary frost. Rune followed them past sleeping firs and paid his price when a low branch snagged his strand into a bright, silly knot. The sparks stopped at a hollow stump where something ticked softly inside: not a bulb, but a silver snow-beetle with a glowing back.
“Need a lift?” Rune breathed. The beetle crawled into the thirteenth socket, and the whole strand hummed like a secret being told. Rune trotted home changed, not brighter than before, but listening harder. Next time you see the dangling bulb by his hoof, see if you can spot where the mystery first winked under the prickly pines.
