Under the grape vine’s rough old trunk, Liora tapped one foot on the bark and invented Dot-Map Dare. The rule was secret-simple: hop to every dark freckle of sap before the woodpecker’s shadow slid past. She wanted the perfect path, the kind no cousin could copy. The bark smelled dusty-sweet, and the grapes above clicked softly in the breeze like tiny beads in a pocket.
Then one “sap freckle” blinked. Another rolled uphill. They were not freckles at all, but soot-mites carrying warning crumbs from a cracked branch. “Follow the dots,” whispered the smallest mite, and curiosity yanked Liora forward faster than fear. She spread her plain young wings over the trail, catching each crumb-mark before the wind could scatter it. Dot by dot, she led the vine beetles away just as the cracked branch sighed and dropped.
After that, lanternflies kept the game’s map on their wings: black dots for the mite trail, pale lines for the bark roads, and a flash of red for the danger nobody saw coming. Ever since, if you spot a lanternfly resting on a grape vine, dare your eyes to follow the dots and find Liora’s secret-simple path.
