🎨 How to color it

Color the basketball burnt orange, the rim cherry red, the net bright white with pale gray shadows, and the backboard panels icy blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny stained-glass sections on the ball and net, then switch to broader strokes for the larger background rays. Try a sunset fade behind the backboard, moving from golden yellow near the hoop to violet at the outer corners.

The little glass key clicked in Soren’s pocket as the arena lights hummed low. He wanted to return it to the locker where his mother kept her old referee whistle, but the locker row was beyond the court, and the court looked different after closing—silver lines glowing under the varnish, shadows tucked beneath every seat.

At center court, the key warmed like a sunlit pebble. A soft tap-tap answered from the dark end of the gym, where a backboard nobody used hung behind folded mats. Soren swallowed, stepped off the safe rubber aisle, and crossed the bright floor. His sneakers squeaked so loudly he gave up his silence, but the sound made the hidden hoop wake. “Just one,” whispered a voice inside the rim.

Soren set the key in a notch under the backboard. The net shivered, and a stained-glass ball rolled from the shadows into his hands, cool and heavy as rain. He shot without aiming. The ball kissed the rim, slipped through, and left a small orange glow in the net. When he returned the key, it no longer only belonged to the whistle; next time you see the ball resting in that basket, check whether the little glow is still hiding where Soren first heard the key click.
