🎨 How to color it

Give the mermaid’s tail alternating teal and sea-glass green scales, her shell crown and scallop top soft coral pink, the fish sunny gold, and the coral branches warm peach. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow tail panels, hair ribbons, and curling wave bands, working from the outer edges inward to keep the stained-glass lines crisp. Try a deep-to-light blue gradient through the swirling background bubbles so the pale pink shells and warm fish seem to glow through water.

The pearl bead clicked once in Vesper’s palm, exactly the sound the tideglass archive made when a secret shelf opened. She meant only to put it back before the curator noticed; a plain thing, cloudy as old milk, except it had belonged to her sister’s last message cord. Then it whispered a street name that no street in the reef had used for fifty years, and curiosity tugged harder than caution.

So Vesper left the cool hush of labeled shells and swam past fan coral that brushed her arms like wet paper. At the eel toll, she paid with her best silver hairpin. At the chimney vents, she traded a song for a map drawn in warm bubbles. “You didn’t hear this from me,” said a shrimp in a cracked teacup, “but pearls remember mouths.”

The old street was only a current now, curling under broken coral and bright, nosy fish. Vesper pressed the bead to her ear. It did not give back her sister’s voice. It gave back every voice that had carried the message along: eel, shrimp, courier, stranger, friend. By the time she returned, hair loose and hands empty of the pin, Vesper no longer wanted the box. She strung the cloudy pearl at her throat, where it clicked once, like a secret shelf opening.
