🎨 How to color it

Layer the sugar skull in ivory and turquoise, the marigolds in golden orange, the candles in warm cream, and the arched stained-glass panels in cobalt and violet. Use sharp pencils for the tiny petals, teeth, leaf veins, and curling cheek lines, then color one enclosed section at a time to keep the glasswork crisp. Try a sunrise gradient behind the tall arch, shifting from rose near the candles to deep blue at the top.

Every evening, Santos set scraps of colored glass along the altar rail, tapping each piece until it sang a clean little clink. He wanted to make a game no one could buy from the festival stalls, a race powered only by candlelight and clever hands. Then one night, a gust burst through the arcade and sent every test token skittering into the marigolds.

Because of that, Santos weighted the pieces with fruit pits and carved grooves to catch the waxy glow. Because of that, the first racer shot ahead, flashing blue, orange, blue across the tiles, while the others jammed at the arch. “Again,” he said, laughing, with soot on his thumb and pride bright in his chest.

At last he cut one final curve, fitted it by hand, and the racers streamed around the skull-shaped gate in a ringing rush. The glass sang under his fingers, clink by clean little clink.
