Every day after school, Zadie rolled her tiny car into Bay Two and tightened one more piece of her homemade horn. It was built from a jam jar lid, two bottle caps, and a rubber tube that smelled faintly of grape jelly. Mr. Pike, the mechanic, let her use the quiet corner as long as she put every wrench back on its peg.
Until one day, the horn gave a proud little “phffft” and swallowed the last socket. Because of that, Zadie had to open every drawer in the rolling cart. Because of that, she found a false bottom under the smallest sockets, hiding a brass squeaker shaped like a snail.
“That is not mine,” Mr. Pike said, trying not to laugh. Zadie popped it into her horn, twisted the cap by hand, and HONK-SQUEAK! The sound made even the fire extinguisher seem surprised. She stood beside the open hood, greasy-pawed and grinning, proud as a parade band. Next time you see the tool cart, check the tiniest drawer—something may still smell faintly of grape jelly.
