Under the tall tree, Nell patted her pocket. Empty. Her red ribbon was gone, and the ladder to the treehouse looked much higher than yesterday. Leaves whispered shh-shh above her head, and a bird chirped from a branch as if asking, “Going up?” Nell took one rung, then another. The wood felt warm and scratchy under her hands.
Halfway up, a breeze tugged her hat away. Nell had to climb down, catch it from the daisies, and start again with shaky knees. At the porch, she heard a tiny tap-tap beneath the boards. “Hello?” she whispered. There, where nobody ever peeked, sat a nest lined with her red ribbon and three speckled eggs. Nell smiled and left it there. Next time you see the little porch, can you keep the ribbon’s secret under it?
