Every evening after janitors rolled their carts away, Felix stayed on the empty arena floor and shot one ball only when the scoreboard clock clicked to two seconds. Click, hum, squeak—he waited through all of it, even when the lights buzzed like trapped bees. He wanted to hear the perfect swish at the very last moment. The trouble was the old scoreboard always coughed at two seconds and made him giggle too hard to shoot straight.
One night, when the clock showed 0:02 again, something inside the HOME panel went “mrrrp.” Felix froze with the ball above his head. Because he waited instead of flinging it, a tiny striped arena cat poked one paw through the number eight. Because the cat batted a loose wire, the GUEST score blinked 67, then 76, then “GO.”
“Fine,” Felix whispered, “but no heckling.” He released the ball just as the cat sneezed. The shot arced high, kissed the rim, and dropped with a soft whip of net. The scoreboard purred for the first time all week. If you check the big numbers, you might spot where the sneaky buzzer had been hiding through every click, hum, squeak.
