🎨 How to color it

Color the witch’s hat deep violet with golden stars, her broom straw honey yellow, the scarecrow’s overalls faded denim, and the pumpkins rich orange. Use sharp colored pencils for the curling vines, corn leaves, hat stars, and patchwork squares, then switch to broader strokes on the pumpkin ribs and open sky. Try making the star-marked pumpkin glow with pale yellow at the star and deeper orange around the edges, as if it is keeping a secret.

Under the clicking corn leaves, Junia tucked a pebble in her boot and made herself a dare: wake one sleeping pumpkin before the rooster even dreamed of crowing. She tapped stems with her broom, whispered fizzy rhymes, and sniffed the cold dirt for sparks of cinnamon. Nothing stirred except a paper-dry scarecrow sleeve. Then, by the crooked path, one huge pumpkin answered with a tiny golden blink shaped like a star.

“Keep quiet,” Junia whispered, which was silly, because her grin had already told the whole patch. The star warmed her fingertip like toast. Joy bubbled up so hard she could not hold it in, so she pointed the glow toward the fence, the corn, the scarecrow, and the bat looping overhead. One by one, the pumpkins lit their round cheeks with little hidden stars.

That is why, ever since, pumpkin patches do not truly wake at noon or even at breakfast. They wake when someone finds the first secret and shares it. If you ever spot the pumpkin with the star, hush a little—can you feel the clicking corn leaves waiting too?
