Under the biggest old branch, a whisper passed through the leaves: the dusk chorus would begin with no sparkle at all. Perrin wanted one bright thing to lift everyone’s song, so he stepped from his snug hollow into the cool green hush. Ferns brushed his feet like wet paintbrushes, and pine needles ticked softly overhead. “Just one glimmer,” he told the beetles, who kept their tiny business to themselves.
He crossed to the lichen log where nobody bothered looking, because it smelled of rain and old bark and ordinary mud. To peek beneath the thickest moss, Perrin had to give up the silver down feather tucked at his chest; it snagged and stayed there, fluttering like a little flag. Then the moss lifted. Hidden under it was a pocket of firefly eggs, glowing gold as secret lanterns.
Perrin did not take them. He called the chorus to the branch, and when the first fireflies rose, joy burst out in hoots, chirps, and wingbeats. Next time you spot moss on that branch, keep the secret kindly: one bright thing became enough sparkle for everyone.
